Student Handbook and Dress Code
Please revisit the school dress code with your child. We will be discussing it in class with students as well. Shorts should be as long as the longest finger when arms are held by their sides. Tops should be at least 3 fingers wide. Shirts that may fall off the shoulders should have a tank top on underneath that is at least 3 fingers wide. Also, no flip flops. If students are violating the dress code, they will have to go to the front office to call home for a change of clothes and stay in the office until the new clothes arrive.
Arrival
Students may arrive at school no earlier than 8:15 am. If you drive your child to school, please do not let your child out of the car until there is a staff member on duty to receive him/her. Your child should be inside the classroom no later than 8:45 and ready to begin his/her day. Rushing and arriving late can get the day started in a less than positive way. Students are tardy after 8:45 am. Please keep in mind that the students do have morning work daily, and when they rush in close to 8:45 each day, they do not have time to complete their assignments.
Dismissal
If there is EVER a change in the way your child will go home, I need to receive a written note. Please do not rely on email the day of in lieu of a note because I may not have an opportunity to check email during the day. You may also contact the office, and they will notify me of any change as well. No child will be able to change the assigned plan to go home unless a note/notice is received.
Absences
If or when your child is going to be absent, it is so helpful if you could email or send a note letting me know he/she will not be at school that day. It is easier to put the absence in the attendance system correctly (excused vs. unexcused) rather than having to change it after your child returns to school. If this is not possible, please send a note when he/she returns to school. We cannot count an absence as excused without a written note. Please know that our school policy states that family trips are not considered excused.
Snack
Please send a healthy/working snack to school each day such as: fruit, cheese, crackers, pretzels, vegetables, etc. Do not send cupcakes, chips, candy,
desserts, or sodas. If your child brings in a snack that is not healthy, he/she will not be allowed to eat it in class. We will be eating our snack in the morning. Your child may also bring in a water bottle to have with snack.
Lunch
Our lunch time is 12:25-12:55. Parents may only eat with their child and not their child’s friends. Be sure to sign in at the office and get a name tag. You will be able to eat at the Parent Table in the cafeteria or picnic tables outside of the cafeteria. Please ensure that your child meets up with the class in a timely manner following lunch.
Homework
Students are required to log their reading each night. They will keep this in their daily folder so that they can access it in school as well. Homework will consist of 20 minutes of daily reading. Encouraging reading at home is extremely important when it comes to building strong readers! Weekly homework for math will be sent home on Monday and should be returned on Friday.
Supplies
The supply list that was provided to you has all of the required materials needed for 1st grade. If you do not have one, please visit the Cornelius home page.
Behavior
Students will be expected to follow the “Big 3” at all times when at school. I encourage students to go above and beyond to help others, show respect, and be a good citizen of our school and community. Students will receive rewards and/or consequences for their daily behavior. Please check your child’s daily folder each night for any notes from me concerning his/her behavior or assignments.
Parent Communication
Students will bring work home each Thursday, in their blue Communication Folder. Graded work in this folder must be returned the next day (Friday). Please check this each Thursday night, and return all papers in the sign and return side signed the next day. Students may be asked to bring home a no homework slip if they failed to complete a homework assignment. This must be signed by a parent and returned the next day. Please contact me through email or by calling the school with any questions or concerns.
